METRICS FOR THE MASSES
Portable wireless technology is certainly making it easier for everyone to become an analyst and with more and more data becoming available to staff, players and fans alike its understanding and using this technology that is an important element. In the past some 48hours would elapse before Prozone or Amisco were furnishing you with match data and video combined. Today everything is going realtime. And the latest innovation from Adidas certainly looks like an exciting venture.
Adidas MiCoach will be used in this years MLS All-Star match in Philadelphia, initially to test the technology in action. Linking straight to an iPad it will provide realtime physical data on players with respect to speeds, distances, acceleration etc as well as physiological data in the form of Heart Rate.
The software will also track player position and should bring the ‘heat map’ to the world of soccer, something which has been in use in Tennis for many years. This will give an indication of the positions on the field that the player occupied either for the most amount of time or highest occurrence.
Whether this technology is the breakthrough that all coaches have been waiting for remains to be seen but it certainly is an exciting development. Will it allow coaches to make ‘Smart Substitutions’ based on fatiguing players, or will players learn to work the system by conserving their output to get through the normal ‘substitution window’ that normally exists from 60-70minutes? Time will tell.
